The French 18th-century technique of guilloché enameling, in which a design is engine-turned on metal and then covered with translucent, colorful enamels, was revived in the early 20th century. The houses of two prominent jewelers, Louis François Cartier (French, 1819–1904) and Peter Carl Fabergé (Russian, 1846–1920), brought this traditional technique to new heights. Their lavish and imaginative creations delighted the wealthy elites of the period, who acquired them for their extravagant collections of small precious objects or bibelots. The design of the Red Guilloché Heart Frame is reminiscent of the intricate guilloché objets d’art in the Museum's collection that were produced in the workshops of these prominent jewelers.
