Frank Stella: Painting into Architecture
Frank Stella: Painting into Architecture

By Paul Goldberger. Foreword by Philippe de Montebello. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Frank Stella: Painting into Architecture," at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, May 1–July 29, 2007.

Since the early 1990s, the American artist Frank Stella (b. 1936) has designed a variety of fascinating and complex architectural structures, including a band shell, pavilions, and museums. This informative book demonstrates how Stella's aesthetic has evolved since the 1960s from painting, to wall reliefs, to freestanding sculpture that extends into architecture. The catalogue is produced in conjunction with the artist's first one-person exhibition at the Museum and includes illustrations of twenty-five of his highly inventive and imaginative works that comprise the exhibition, ranging from small models to a portion of a building at full-scale. Photographs of additional works by the artist and several of the buildings built by architects who have influenced Stella are also included.

40 pages, 54 illustrations (27 in full color), 10 in. x 10 in. Paper.
