Pow! Bam! Neckerchief

The design on the Museum's neckerchief is adapted from the details on an American pair of evening pumps from 1984 in the collection of the Museum's Costume Institute. These shoes are decorated with leather appliqués in bright, undulating splotches that spell “POWER” and “POP”—a reference to comic books and their exciting visual style. The use of onomatopoeic words in fashion was inspired by the essence of the superhero characters in DC and Marvel comic books. Since the first appearance of Superman, in 1938, superheroes have exercised a powerful influence over our collective imagination, serving as avatars of, and conduits for, our hopes, dreams, and desires. Constantly redefined and reworked according to popular canons of beauty, superheroes embody the superlative. The superhero body is forever youthful and awe inspiring—in this way, superheroes and fashion are alike. Moreover, both superheroes and fashion reflect the power of transformation. Fashion, like the superhero, celebrates metamorphosis, providing unlimited opportunities to remake and reshape the flesh and the self.
