Clearance - Ghiberti Angel Christmas Ornaments
Ghiberti Angel Christmas Ornaments

The Gates of Paradise ranks among the greatest creations of Renaissance art. Made by Lorenzo Ghiberti (Italian [Florentine], ca. 1378–1455) for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence between 1425 and 1452, the two doors with their ten relief panels in gilt bronze are considered by many art historians to mark the beginning of the artistic, humanistic, technological, and scientific reawakening of Europe. Each panel represents an event from the Old Testament, beginning with Adam and Eve. For this first relief, Ghiberti divided the visual field into four components, each depicting events from the Creation, but interwove them into a single unified image. The Museum’s Ghiberti Angel Christmas Ornaments are based on two from among the crescent of angels hovering above God as he creates Eve from Adam’s rib. Ghiberti modeled these angels in low relief, making them recede into the visual plane and thus achieving spatial depth in his work. Produced in cooperation with the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence; and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Florence.

24K gold plate. Individually packaged in a box with a flannel pouch; includes a red ribbon for hanging. Angel on right available only, height 4 in.
