Sale - Paisley Color Block Wool Shawl
Paisley Color Block Wool Shawl

This cozy shawl of fine merino wool is a beautiful adaptation of a 19th-century Indian original in the Museum’s Costume Institute. Our design pairs traditional swirling paisley motifs with updated color palettes. The colors and intricate paisley arabesques of the adaptation recall those of the original. The teardrop-shaped motif called “paisley” evolved from depictions of flowering plants created by artists of the Mughal Indian court beginning in the 17th century. The motif of a single flowering plant soon became typical in Mughal art and was often used in the decoration of textiles. Over time it developed into a more abstract, curving shape resembling an elongated comma. The weavers of the region of Kashmir, in the Himalayas, became well-known in the Mughal period for producing textiles embellished with this pattern. Shawls from the Orient became popular in Europe in the late 18th century, following Napoleon’s military campaigns in Egypt. European manufacturers further adapted the stylized flower motif into the teardrop shape that is recognized today. The Scottish town of Paisley, already a linen-manufacturing center, transformed itself into a major producer of these textiles, and the design ultimately was named after the town.

Imported merino wool. 80 in. x 24 in., with 1 in. self-fringe. Available in light turquoise or plum/red.
