New - Foldable Eyeglasses Bookmark

In the collection of the New-York Historical Society is an ingenious foldable paper advertisement for an optician in the shape of a pair of eyeglasses, dating about 1880–1920. It reads, “Oelschlaeger Bros./ 42 East 23rd St./ New York” on one lens and, “We invite an/ Inspection of our stock of/ Optical Goods/ Suitable for Christmas/ and New-Years Gifts,” on the other. Our Foldable Eyeglasses Bookmark reproduces this original advertisement in etched brass and silver plate. As the pace of economic growth in New York City accelerated in the 19th and 20th centuries—and as the physical city itself expanded outward into the boroughs and vertically into the fast-rising skyscrapers—businesses of all kinds turned to the evolving advertising industry to call attention to their goods and services.
