The Mughal Emperors and the Islamic Dynasties of India, Iran and Central Asia, 1206–1925
The Mughal Emperors and the Islamic Dynasties of India, Iran and Central Asia, 1206–1925

By Francis Robinson

This volume is an introduction to Islamic civilization from Iran and Central Asia through Afghanistan to India, exploring the great Mughal rulers from the 13th to the 20th centuries. Among these emperors are Timur, or Tamerlaine, who lived a life of remorseless conquest; Shah Abbas the Great, who brought the achievement of early modern Iran to its peak at Isfahan; Akbar the Great, who fostered an idea of inclusive government; and Shah Jahan, who build the world-renowned Taj Mahal. This volume brings to life these many rulers through lively biographical portraits illuminated by vivid descriptions from contemporary chroniclers. These men were administrators and military leaders, at times engaged in bloody struggles for succession, as well as enlightened patrons of the arts and sciences. Women often played a prominent part in affairs, from court intrigues and artistic patronage to occasionally ruling themselves. Illustrated with exquisite paintings, manuscripts, architecture, and decoration, The Mughal Emperors explores the characters of the men who ruled over some of the most prominent Islamic civilizations.

240 pages, 238 illustrations (123 in full color), 7 7/8 in. x 10 in. Hardcover.
