Sunburst Pin/Pendant

The design of the Museum’s pin/pendant is adapted from the sunburst decoration on a shaffron, or head armor for a horse, in the Museum’s collection. The original shaffron comes from a complete horse armor dated 1554 and made by Wolfgang Grosschedel (German, 1517–1562), who lived and worked in the city of Landshut, where he was one of the most notable armor makers of his generation. The piece is also decorated with the coat of arms of the Bavarian noble family Freiberg von Aschau, and may have belonged to Pankraz von Freiberg (1508–1565). The armor was preserved in the family’s ancestral home, Hohenaschau Castle, until the mid-19th century.
