Women’s footwear embraced more variations in the 20th century than in the entire previous history of fashion. Balancing function and fantasy, the great designers of the 20th century created some of the most beautiful shoes ever made, adapting styles from the past with a contemporary sensibility. Our scarf is decorated with colorful sketches of actual shoes now in the Museum’s Costume Institute collection.
