Our charming pin is based on a detail from the oil painting The Judgment of Paris (ca. 1528) by Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, 1472–1553), a celebrated court painter for the electors of Saxony. The painting shows Paris deliberating over the fairest of three goddesses: Minerva, Venus, and Juno. In this story from Greco-Roman mythology, he must choose to whom he will give the coveted prize, a golden apple, which is depicted in the painting as a glass orb. This subject was a favorite of the mature Cranach. In the upper left corner of the painting, Cupid hovers, his bow drawn, readying to fire an arrow.
