Lily and Wisteria Cloisonné Vase

Cloisonné is a technique that combines metalwork and enameling to produce vividly detailed designs on glass or ceramic surfaces. First developed in the Near East, commercial trade brought it to the Byzantine Empire and from there cloisonné traveled along the Silk Road to China. Today, this technique remains widely employed in the production of Asian art objects. The lily and wisteria design on the Museum’s vase is based on that of a 19th-century Japanese original considered a masterpiece of cloisonné. The original is decorated with a variety of botanically accurate flowers against a royal blue background; the large expanses of unblemished enamel are technically difficult to master. Produced in cooperation with the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.
