Met Bestseller - Herakles Knot Necklace
Herakles Knot Necklace

The shape of the two interlocking loops was known to sailors as a reef knot, used for binding rolled sails on ships. Though simple, these knots were extremely strong. The ancient Greeks referred to them as "Herakles knots," since this was the type of knot used by Herakles to tie the skin of the Nemean lion around his neck after he slayed the beast and fulfilled the first of twelve labors given him by King Eurystheus. Because of its affiliation with a Greek hero known for strength and courage, this knot was considered a protective amulet. It was also a symbol of fertility, given Herakles' many children, and was often used to fasten bridal garments. A new subject for the Hellenistic age, the Herakles knot remained a popular ornamental form into Roman times. The Museum's Herakles knot necklace is adapted from the design of an ancient Greek headband from 300–250 B.C.

24K gold plate, lightly antiqued. Length 16 1/2 in.; knot and tassel length 3 1/2 in.
