Sale - French Drawings: Clouet to Seurat
French Drawings: Clouet to Seurat

By Perrin Stein, with a contribution by Martin Royalton-Kisch, 2005. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Clouet to Seurat: French Drawings from The British Museum" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, November 8, 2005–January 29, 2006.

Among the earliest and finest cabinets of drawings in Europe, the Department of Prints and Drawings at The British Museum boasts an enviable collection, built up, for the most part, in earlier centuries when masterpieces were far more readily available than they are today. This publication presents ninety-five works from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries that represent only a fraction of the approximately 2,500 French drawings in the collection, including a group of royal court portraits by Jean Clouet and his son François Clouet, about 500 or so drawings by Claude Lorrain, the French 'old master' artist most beloved of British collectors, and drawings produced in conté crayon by Georges Seurat.

240 pages, 90 full-color illustrations, 9 3/4 in. x 10 3/4 in. Paper.
