One variety of traditional Islamic carpet in Turkey is characterized by a repeated pattern of curvilinear arabesques in yellow, accented with dark blue, on a red ground, within a pseudo-calligraphic border. These have been named “Lottos” by carpet scholars, as they appeared in at least six paintings by the Venetian artist Lorenzo Lotto (born about 1480, died 1556), and he even owned one himself. In the Museum’s collection is such a carpet, made in Turkey in the 17th century. Your Lotto Carpet is based on this original.
This carpet is one-of-a-kind. It was knotted by hand in central Turkey by skilled artisans using the same technique as has been used for centuries. It is 100 percent worsted wool . Dyes are color-fast and environmentally safe.
