An engineer by training, Gustav Eiffel (French, 1832–1923) founded and developed a company specializing in metal structural work, whose crowning achievement was the Eiffel Tower. Constructed to celebrate the World’s Fair of 1889, the Eiffel Tower was initially opposed by many of France’s leading artists and architects. Once completed, however, soaring to a height of 300 meters and offering sweeping views of Paris, the tower enjoyed enormous popular success, attracting over two million visitors during the fair. Today it is one of the most recognized and beloved symbols in the world.

Etched brass plate with hematite finish; with a black tassel. Length 5 1/8 in., width 2 in. at base.

Original price $16.95
