Arts and Crafts Necklace
Arts and Crafts Necklace

The Arts and Crafts movement, initiated in England during the second half of the 19th century, aimed to reassert the importance of craftsmanship in the face of mechanization and mass production. Charles Robert Ashbee was a designer and entrepreneur, and a key figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1888, he established the Guild of Handicraft—a cooperative that sought both to set a high standard of craftsmanship as well as to protect the status of the craftsman. Though the Guild liquidated in 1907, its model inspired other communities throughout the world, and it produced a great volume of work during its ten years. Our necklace is based on a design of a belt buckle made of sterling silver, nephrite, and enamel that is attributed to Ashbee for the Guild. Produced in cooperation with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond.

Sterling silver, with green turquoise. Length 19 in.
