The ornate design of the Museum's Papal Pearl Pin is based on one of the motifs on the sumptuous, jeweled choir robe worn by Pope Alexander VI in the painting Resurrection of Christ by Pinturicchio (Italian, ca. 1454–1513), housed in the collection of the Vatican. In this remarkable portrait of Alexander VI, contained in the otherwise uninspired painting, Pinturicchio achieved previously unreached heights, which placed him on a level with the greatest portrait painters of the 15th century.

24K gold plate, with cultured freshwater pearls and glass amethyst. Length 1 5/8 in.
