Egyptian Menat Necklace

Our necklace is based on an original in the Museum’s collection from Egypt (Dynasty 18, ca. 1391–1353), consisting of many strands of faience and glass beads attached to a bronze counterpoise. Menat necklaces were ritual implements that were held in the hands and shaken, especially in the service of the goddess Hathor, whose priestesses are commonly shown holding the emblem. When officiating as priestesses, queens and ladies-in-waiting also wore or carried them.

Polished white and green jade, yellow agate, carnelian, turquoise, black onyx, fluorite, jasper, and amethyst, with 24K gold-plated sterling silver clasp. Length 18 in.
