Music of the South of France CD
Music of the South of France CD

Bounded by Spain and Italy, the French region south of the Massif-Central has long attracted outsiders—among them the artists Van Gogh and Matisse, as well as the designer Chanel—with its Mediterranean climate and culture. In a country where the national anthem is known as the Marseillaise, it is perhaps no surprise that this region has also given birth to much of France's greatest music. This musical compilation features a range of sunny, spirited works of the South. Included here are 16th-century provençal folk songs ("Ne l’oserary-je/Voulez-vous que je vous dise?," "Bressarello"), classical works by southern composers Milhaud, de Séverac, and Fauré, and twentieth-century chansons by area songwriters ("La Mer," "La Java Bleue," "Marie, Petit Beguin du Mois de Mai"). Thematically, there is also a range, with pieces about the region ("L’Arlesienne"), pieces simply about love ("J'ai Rêvé d’une Fleur"), and a few that embrace both subjects ("Sur les Bancs du Prado"). Among the performers are the Orchestra Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, the musical icon Charles Trenet, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art Concerts and Lectures Series artist Martin Best.
