Luxury Fine Jewelry  >  Byzantium
Amazon Shield Three-Stone Earrings
Amazon Shield Three-Stone Earrings
In connection with the exhibition "Byzantium: Faith and Power (1261–1557)" the Metropolitan Museum collaborated with The Gem Palace in Jaipur, India—jewelry suppliers to India's royal families for over seven generations—to produce handcrafted pieces that reflect the intricate technique and glorious splendor of Byzantine jewelry.

Precious and semiprecious stones—emeralds, sapphires, rubies, pearls, and tourmalines—are set in designs based on the extraordinary pieces that have survived from the empire founded by Constantine in A.D. 330. Our contemporary adaptations emphasize the unique combinations of intense color and refined metalworking techniques of the Byzantine culture, whose influence extended beyond the empire's borders into Egypt, Southern Europe, and Syria, and later into Slavic countries.

Based on elements from a Late Roman necklace, these earrings incorporate rubies, emeralds, and blue sapphires into 22K gold shapes representing the shields thought to have been used by the great Amazon warriors. Length 2 1/4 in. Pierced, with 22K gold ear wires.

We regret that we cannot make the Museum's Member discount available on this unique consignment offering.

This handcrafted item is unique. Product availability and price as shown cannot be guaranteed. If a particular item is no longer available, we may be able to commission a similar item, with price subject to change.
