Gutzon Borglum: Abraham Lincoln
Gutzon Borglum: Abraham Lincoln

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum (American, 1867–1941), a close friend of Auguste Rodin, is best known for his colossal sculptures at Mount Rushmore and his six-ton marble bust of President Abraham Lincoln, on display in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. In the collection of the New-York Historical Society is a bronze statuette of Lincoln that Borglum (who named his son Lincoln) made in 1912. It may have been a competition model for the statue of Lincoln for Cincinnati’s Lytle Park. Though Borglum was not awarded that commission, the statuette magnificently captures the distinctive features of the president’s face. The Metropolitan Museum’s sculptural reproduction program, arguably the finest in the world, has used laser-scanning technology to precisely reproduce the original in bonded bronze, and the model has then been patinated by hand by an artist. Reproduced in cooperation with the New-York Historical Society.

Bonded bronze, hand patinated. Height 11 in., width 5 1/2 in., depth 6 in., including base.
