In 1935, Walker Evans (American, 1903–1975) was commissioned to prepare a photographic portfolio of the sculptures in a historic show of African art, held at the Museum of Modern Art that same year. In this catalogue, Virginia-Lee Webb assembles the pieces of numerous puzzles in order to elucidate the history, details, and context of this formative project.
