Constantinople: Istanbul's Historic Heritage
Constantinople: Istanbul's Historic Heritage

By Stéphane Yerasimos

Constantinople, the legendary metropolis on the Bosphorus, became famous as the capital of two great empires. In A.D. 330, the city was christened Constantinople and became the heart of the Byzantine Empire. Then, in 1453, the Ottomans conquered the city, which was renamed Istanbul after the Turkish War of Independence. This fascinating city occupied a strategic political position between the West and the East for centuries and inspired artists from both cultures to create works of the very highest quality. This new historical survey is accompanied by photographs of the Church of Chora, the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace, and the city's many other artistic treasures.

400 pages, 300 full-color illustrations, 8 3/4 in. x 10 1/4 in. Paper.
