Leonardo da Vinci Bookmark

The images decorating the Museum’s bookmark are adapted from illustrations and designs by Leonardo da Vinci. Even in an era of boundless scientific discovery, technological invention, and artistic achievement, Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) stands as an icon in Western consciousness—the very embodiment of the universal Renaissance genius. Trained in Florence as a painter and sculptor, and well known for his Mona Lisa and Last Supper, Da Vinci is also celebrated for his scientific contributions. His curiosity and insatiable hunger for knowledge never left him. He was constantly observing, experimenting, and inventing. Drawing was, for him, a tool for recording his investigation of nature. Although completed works by Da Vinci are few, he left a large body of drawings (almost 2,500) that record his ideas, most of which are gathered into notebooks, or, codices. The Forster Codices (ca. 1500) are a collection of five notebooks by Da Vinci named after the 19th-century British collector John Forster, who bequeathed his entire library to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1876. Among the many illustrations and writings in these notebooks are designs of a perpetual-motion wheel, which have been reproduced on this bookmark.
