Cranberry Glass Pin
Cranberry Glass Pin

The Museum’s pin is based on an original pair of earrings from the early 20th century and created by Hazel Blake French (American, 1890–1972). The earrings feature ovals of hand-made colored glass framed by delicate cranberry leaves and berries. One of the most important jewelers in the American Arts and Crafts movement, French collected colorful fragments of glass as a young girl, and as an adult returned to her childhood collection as material for her jewelry. She was fascinated by the glass from the famous Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, established in 1825 by Deming Jarves. The company was known for its tableware, lamps, bottles, and numerous other pieces of blown, cut, engraved, molded, and pressed glass. French cut the glass into pieces for jewelry, winning numerous awards for her expressive designs, which evoked the colors of the Cape Cod landscape. Produced in cooperation with the Sandwich Glass Museum, Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Sterling silver, antiqued, with colored glass. Length 2 1/8 in., width 1 7/8 in.
