The Uffizi Gallery Museum and The Pitti Palace Collections

By Alexandra Bonfante-Warren

This set features two of the world's most prestigious museums: the Uffizi Gallery and the Pitti Palace. Florence’s Uffizi Gallery is the world’s oldest museum, and the building itself is an architectural jewel. The Uffizi displays masterpieces of painting that date from the 13th to the 19th centuries, as well as great works of sculpture from classical antiquity. The first volume in this set tells the story of the incredible collection housed in the Uffizi, begun in the mid-1500s by the Medici. Readers will delight in Cimabue’s Madonna of the Holy Trinity, Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera, Raphael’s Madonna of the Goldfinch, Titian’s The Venus of Urbino, and other masterpieces by celebrated artists such as Hans Memling, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, El Greco, Goya, Tiepolo, Rubens, and many others. Situated across the Arno River from Florence’s busy city center, the 15th-century Pitti Palace is one of the city's most celebrated buildings. This second volume explores the 300 years the Pitti served as a palace, home first to the Medici, Florence’s ruling family and among the greatest art patrons of their time, and then to the House of Savoy, the imperial family of Europe. Also presented is the Pitti’s splendid art collection ranging from early masters such as Giotto and Duccio to 20th-century artists like de Chirico. In addition to the paintings in the Palatine Gallery, the sculptures, and decorative objects, this book invites the readers outside the Pitti Palace to see the magnificent Boboli Gardens and its ponds, vistas, walks, and regal retreats. With stunning photography and remarkably insightful texts, these two volumes bring to life the brilliance and splendor of Florence, and with it the extraordinary art collections housed in these two remarkable buildings.

640 pages, 600 full-color illustrations, 9 5/8 in. x 13 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket. Two-volume set, with slipcase.
