New - Great Houses of New England
Great Houses of New England

By Roderic H. Blackburn; Photography by Geoffrey Gross

New England abounds in magnificent houses and mansions, and this stunningly photographed book presents 19 of the best. By way of introduction, architectural historian Roderic H. Blackburn provides a guide to English and American architectural periods and styles, illustrated with photographs and drawings. From the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Georgian mansion of merchant and ship owner Captain Archibald Macpheadris, to the highly personalized classicism of the A. Everett Austin House in Hartford, Connecticut, the houses span three centuries and demonstrate a resplendent range of styles, including Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Romanesque Revival, and Shingle Style. Palatial masterpieces such as Stanford White–designed Rosecliff in Newport, Rhode Island, stand alongside such eclectic and endearing gems as Beauport in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Photographer Geoffrey Gross lavishes careful attention on the houses’ stunning exteriors and sumptuous interiors as well as their gardens. Color photographs appear on almost every page, and there are double-page color spreads. Enter the world of builders, homeowners, artisans, merchants, statesmen—in short, those men and women who marked New England with their vision, determination, and craft.

272 pages, 200 color illustrations. With a map and contact information for the house museums. 9 5/8 in. x 11 1/4 in. Hardcover, clothbound with jacket.
