Egyptian Lapis and Malachite Earrings

Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire when Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated at the Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. The Romans left the religion and culture of Egypt largely intact, and mummification remained in wide use. Our earrings are based on a necklace worn by the woman depicted on a painted plaster and cartonnage Egyptian mummy mask from around 60–70 A.D. and now in the Museum’s collection. During the 1st through the 3rd century A.D., the mummy mask flourished in the multicultural cities of Roman Egypt where Egyptian artists followed the Greek painting tradition of depicting the subject in three-quarter view, with a single light source casting realistic shadows and highlights on the face.
