The design decorating our holiday card is a reproduction of a detail from a pietre dure tabletop designed by Austrian artist Theophil Hansen (ca. 1865). The Italian term pietre dure—literally, “hard stones”—refers to the artistic cutting of semiprecious stones to fashion extravagant luxury objects. The style reached its first pinnacle in the 16th century due to the interest of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici of Tuscany, who established the Grand Ducal workshop, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, in 1588 in Florence. The original pietre dure tabletop, now in the Museum's collection, was executed at the Opificio about 1855–60.
