By Petra-Andrea Hinz and Barbara Schulz

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (French, 1759–1840) was one of the most famous flower painters of Western civilization. Commissioned by Empress Joséphine, wife of Napoléon I, Redouté studied with the finest flower painters in France and Amsterdam, and developed a breathtaking skill at translating his observation of nature onto paper. He was also an innovator in the techniques of printing, and introduced stipple engraving to France. This volume is a reproduction of Redouté’s most celebrated work, Les Roses, published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824. Many of the roses Redouté illustrated were from Joséphine’s garden at Malmaison. Preserving every detail of the masterful botanical representations, this handsome book includes reproductions of all of Redouté’s original rose illustrations, and is a celebration of this evocative and romantic flower.

204 pages, 199 illustrations (198 in full color), 10 2/5 in. x 13 in. Hardcover, with jacket.
