Samuel Palmer, 1805–1881: Vision and Landscape
Samuel Palmer, 1805–1881: Vision and Landscape

By William Vaughan, Elizabeth E. Barker, and Colin Harrison, with contributions by David Bindman, David Blayney Brown, Alexandra Grathead, Marjorie Shelley, and Scott Wilcox. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Samuel Palmer (1805–1881): Vision and Landscape" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, March 7–May 29, 2006.

Samuel Palmer (1805–1881) ranks among the most important British landscape painters of the Romantic era. This publication accompanies an exhibition—the first major retrospective of Palmer's work in nearly 80 years—celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth and uniting approximately 100 of his finest watercolors, drawings, etchings, and oils from public and private collections around the world. The catalogue highlights the artist's celebrated early work, executed in a visionary style inspired by William Blake, and reexamines Palmer's vibrant middle-period Italian studies and masterful late watercolors and etchings. Works by artists in Palmer's circle are also included.

256 pages, 160 full-color illustrations, 10 7/8 in. x 8 5/8 in. Paper.
