Greek Art from Prehistoric to Classical: A Resource for Educators
Greek Art from Prehistoric to Classical: A Resource for Educators

By Michael Norris, Carlos Picón, Joan Mertens, Elizabeth Milleker, Sean Hemingway, and Christopher Lightfoot, 2001

The lesson plans, slides, posters, texts, and other materials in this resource provide many tools and approaches for creative use in the teaching of Greek art. Among the contents of this tote box are a map of the ancient Greek world; a brief history of Athens from the sixth to the fourth century B.C.; a look at key aspects of fifth-century Greek life, including myths and religion, philosophy and science, music, poetry, sports, the symposium, and warfare; discussions of Greek art, artists, materials, and the influence of Greek subjects in art of other eras; suggested activities and lesson plans; a timeline; a bibliography and videography; and a guide to Web resources.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's teacher-training programs and accompanying materials are made possible, in part, through a generous grant from Mr. and Mrs. Frederick P. Rose.

Boxed set 9 in. x 12 in. Includes binder: 246 pages, 204 illustrations (21 in full color); 1 full-color poster, 20 35mm slides, 1 CD-ROM, 1 deck of game cards.

Grave stele of a little girl, ca. 450–440 B.C.
Greek
Parian marble; H. 31 1/2 in. (80.01 cm)
Fletcher Fund, 1927 (27.45)

This stele was found on the island of Paros in 1775. The gentle gravity of the child is beautifully expressed through her sweet farewell to her pet doves. Her peplos is unbelted and falls open at the side, and the folds of drapery clearly reveal her stance. Many of the most skillful stone carvers came from the Cycladic islands, where marble was plentiful. The sculptor of this stele could have been among the artists who congregated in Athens during the third quarter of the fifth century B.C. to decorate the Parthenon.
