Music in the Age of Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, 1775–1851) was one of the leading British artists of his era. His work, renowned for technical brilliance and a startling use of light and color, brought the level of respect to landscape painting that had previously been reserved only for history painting. Throughout Turner’s life, his work was influenced by literature, mythology, and music. Some of the most well-loved music of Turner’s time is included on Music in the Age of Turner. From Haydn and Beethoven to Mendelssohn and Smetana, this CD features composers that Turner himself may have admired, listened to, and perhaps even looked to for inspiration. The performances on this CD include Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata played on a 19th-century grand piano in the Museum’s collection.
