A Chinese Garden Court: The Astor Court at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
A Chinese Garden Court: The Astor Court at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

By Alfreda Murck and Wen Fong, reprinted from The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin (Winter 1980/1981), fifth printing, 2004.

Installed in the Museum's Far Eastern collection in 1981, the Astor Court is a Ming-dynasty garden court set in the midst of galleries devoted to Chinese paintings. The model for the Astor Court is a small courtyard in The Garden of the Master of the Fishing Nets in Suzhou, a city west of Shanghai that experienced a flourishing garden culture during the Ming period. This catalogue discusses the time-honored tradition of garden culture in the Ming Dynasty, and examines the history and relationship of the Astor Court at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Garden of the Master of the Fishing Nets in Suzhou.

64 pages, more than 71 illustrations (27 in full color), 8 1/2 in. x 11 in. Paper.
