Georges Seurat: A Sunday on La Grande Jatte Music Box
Georges Seurat: A Sunday on La Grande Jatte Music Box

Neo-Impressionism is a term applied to an avant-garde art movement that flourished principally in France from 1886 to 1906. Led by the example of Georges Seurat (French, 1859–1891), artists of the Neo-Impressionist circle renounced the random spontaneity of Impressionism and the conventional method of mixing pigments on the palette, in favor of using separate touches of interwoven pigment on the canvas. Our music box features a reproduction of a study for the painting A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by George Seurat. Although Seurat executed the final painting using small dots characteristic of his Pointillist technique, in this study he applied small, patchy brushstrokes to weave together the pigments. The music box plays Clair de Lune by Debussy when open.

Varnished wood with black lacquered finish; with a ceramic tile top and blue velvet interior. Length 7 1/8 in., width 5 1/4 in., depth 2 1/2 in.
