Carnelian Bead Necklace with Scarab Pendant

When 19th-century goldsmiths turned to ancient examples for design inspiration, they created what has become known as "archaeological jewelry." The original Italian necklace on which our adaptation is based is composed of mounted carnelian scarabs in beaded frames strung on a chain of granulated gold beads alternating with cylindrical beads. It incorporates an ancient form of ornamentation known as a grappolo, which uses tiny gold balls or droplets that are fused together. Produced in cooperation with the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
