After acting as regent for her young nephew-stepson Thutmose III, Hatshepsut, the great female pharaoh of Egypt's 18th Dynasty, assumed the title of king and exercised the full powers of the throne as senior co-ruler with Thutmose. She ruled during a period of prosperity and immense artistic creativity that produced innovations in sculpture, decorative arts, and architecture.
