Met Bestseller - Filigree Heart Pearl Necklace
Filigree Heart Pearl Necklace

The great cities of Rome, Antioch, and Alexandria were the main centers of jewelry production during the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., but by the 6th century A.D., Constantinople had eclipsed them to become the paramount site of jewelry production. The Byzantine capital’s prestige can be measured both by the quantities of high-quality jewelry since found outside the Empire’s borders and by the many copies made by jewelers working outside the Empire, especially in the Germanic world to the north and west. The Museum’s Filigree Heart Pearl Necklace is based on the heart-shaped clasp of an original elegant emerald and pearl necklace found among the second Cypriot Treasure. The island of Cyprus, within the borders of the Byzantine empire, was an important trading center in the eastern Mediterranean. The second Cypriot Treasure, discovered in 1902 in Karavas, a small town near the principal seaport on the island’s north shore, is an impressive collection of gold and silver vessels, dishes, and jewelry.
