The teardrop-shaped motif called "paisley" evolved out of the depictions of flowering plants that were created by the artists of the Mughal Indian court beginning in the 17th century. The motif of a single flowering plant soon became typical in Mughal art and was often used in the decoration of textiles; over time it evolved into a more abstract, curving shape that resembled an enlarged comma. European manufacturers, looking to shawls brought over from Asia following Napoleon's military campaigns in Egypt in the late 18th century, further adapted the stylized flower motif into the teardrop shape that is recognized today. The Museum's Costume Institute has in its collection a colorful cashmere shawl manufactured in early 19th-century imperial Russia. With its brilliant stripes in red, blue, gold, and white, the garment is one of the finest surviving examples of its type. Our paisley shawl is adapted from this original textile.
