The Museum's necklace is based on one worn by a woman depicted in an Egyptian mummy portrait from around A.D. 100–120 that was excavated in 1888. During the 1st through the 3rd century A.D., the mummy portrait flourished in the multicultural cities of Roman Egypt where Egyptian artists followed the Greek painting tradition of depicting the subject in three-quarter view, with a single light source casting realistic shadows and highlights on the face. Produced in cooperation with The British Museum, London.
