The Wiener Werkstätte, or Viennese Workshops, were founded by designers Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser in 1903, amid the excitement and vitality of turn-of-the-century Vienna. Their goal was to make work by fine craftsmen equivalent to that of fine artists. The Wiener Werkstätte promoted progressive designs based on meticulous proportions and restrained detail, and executed objects with refined handiwork. More than a hundred artisans were employed by the Wiener Werkstätte in the early-20th century, producing such products as glass and metals tablewares, ceramics, leather goods, textiles, furniture, jewelry, and graphic design. The Wiener Werkstätte also printed numerous postcards with bold and imaginative images. The elegant appliqué design on our shawl is adapted from an image of a rose on a color lithograph now in the Museum’s collection.
