New - Beyond Babylon: Art, Trade, and Diplomacy in the Second Millennium B.C. - Hardcover
Beyond Babylon: Art, Trade, and Diplomacy in the Second Millennium B.C. - Hardcover

Edited by Joan Aruz, with Kim Benzel and Jean Evans. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Beyond Babylon: Art, Trade, and Diplomacy in the Second Millennium B.C.” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, November 18, 2008–March 15, 2009.

Four thousand years ago, trade by sea and land linked distant civilizations to one another to an astonishing degree, and the great royal houses forged intense international relationships. This unprecedented movement of precious materials, luxury goods, and people totally transformed the visual arts throughout a vast territory—from as far west as mainland Greece all the way east to Iran, and from Syria, Mesopotamia, and Egypt in the south to Thrace, Anatolia, and the Caucasus in the north. This important volume showcases objects of the highest artistry in the Museum’s exhibition from royal palaces, temples, and tombs, and even a shipwreck. Many of these objects were excavated only recently or have never been shown abroad. Gold and silver vessels, elaborately carved ivories, copper and glass ingots, jewelry, and wall paintings attest to the intensity and sophistication of interactions in a true international age. Joan Aruz is Curator in Charge, and Kim Benzel and Jean Evans are Assistant Curators in the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

600 pages, 460 illustrations (400 in full color). 9 in. x 12 in. Available in hardcover (clothbound, with jacket) or paper.
