New - The Art of Illumination: The Limbourg Brothers and the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry
The Art of Illumination: The Limbourg Brothers and the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry

By Timothy Bates Husband. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “The Art of Illumination: The Limbourg Brothers and the Belles Heures of the Duc de Berry” at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, California, November 18, 2008–February 8, 2009.

One of the most lavishly illustrated codices of the Middle Ages, and a celebrated object in the Museum’s collection in The Cloisters, the Belles Heures (1405–1408/9) is the only manuscript executed in its entirety by the famed Limbourg brothers. Commissioned by its magisterial patron, Jean de France, duc de Berry, this richly illuminated Book of Hours, a prayer book intended for private devotion, counted among the duke’s large collection of prized possessions. The luminous scenes depicting the legends of the saints, the Hours of the Virgin, and the like, many with elaborately designed borders, exemplify the transcendent splendor of the Limbourg brothers’ talents. Timothy Bates Husband is Curator, Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

400 pages, 350 full-color illustrations. 9 1/4 in. x 12 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
