This eye-catching burnout velvet scarf features a bold palmette pattern. The palmette was one of the most frequently used motifs in classical art of all media and periods. It lent itself to the most varied contexts, from serving as the finial of a marble monument to adorning the handle zone of a vase. The design on the Museum’s scarf is based on an ornament of palmettes that embellishes a terracotta pelike, or jar, once used to hold water or wine and made in Greece about 340 to 330 B.C.
