The world’s first cities emerged at the end of the 4th and during the 3rd millennium B.C. in a vast region that extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indus River Valley. Astonishing contributions to civilization were achieved in urban centers such as Ur in Mesopotamia, Troy in Anatolia, and Mohenjo-daro in the Indus Valley. Remarkable works of sculpture, jewelry, vessels, weapons, and seals survive from elaborate palaces, rich burials, and monumental temples in this region. The Museum’s necklace is based on an original strung with stones and beads from the Near East around 2500 B.C. Produced in cooperation with The British Museum, London.

Carnelian and agate stones, with amethyst and 24K gold-plated sterling silver clasp. Length 18 in.
