In the Roman imperial period, the wearing of lavish jewelry became widespread. Pliny the Elder wrote that Lollia Paulina, wife of the emperor Caligula (ruled A.D. 37–41), frequently wore emeralds and pearls on her head, hair, ears, neck, arms, and fingers. Enthusiasm for opulent jewelry extended to the newly rich, and to satisfy this love of adornment, many goldsmiths migrated from established jewelry-making cities such as Alexandria and Antioch to work in Rome. The design of these earrings is taken from a gold and amethyst necklace whose stones are linked by the shapes of peltae, shields carried by the mythical Amazons. The original design was created in Rome during the 3rd century. Produced in cooperation with The British Museum, London.
