The 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia first brought the designs of reformer William Morris (British, 1834–1896) to the attention of the American public who became captivated by his fresh patterns and flat, naturalistic flower, foliage, vine, and bird designs. This scarf is developed from the artist's intricate wallpaper designs.
