Filigree Hoop Earrings

The nineteenth-century discovery of Etruscan burial grounds revealed chambers painted with figurative scenes executed in a free and naturalistic style. In addition to wall painting, the tombs housed an abundance of sculpture and bronze furnishings as well as extraordinary examples of elegant, highly ornamented jewelry that revealed a technical brilliance in goldsmithing. Etruscan metalwork is noted for its use of granulation, a technique in which tiny grains of gold are fused to an underlying surface metal. Our Filigree Hoop Earrings are based on an original Etruscan pair from the 6th–4th century B.C. made of two rolled and joined gold sheets, and embellished with globules (spheres larger than granules) as well as filigree and granulation. Produced in cooperation with the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
