Tiffany Water Lily Pin/Pendant

A master of many media, Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) was one of America’s most noted decorative artists at the turn of the century. Son of the founder of the silver and jewelry firm Tiffany and Company of New York, Louis Tiffany began his career as a painter but moved quickly to interior decoration and leaded-glass windows, creating innovative types of opalescent glass that radiated deep, vibrant hues. In addition to stained-glass windows and lighting fixtures, Tiffany’s studios also made luminous glass vases and bowls, pottery, furniture, textiles, jewelry, and works in bronze, wood, and enamel. Tiffany’s decorative objects in wood are some of the most rare, as they were produced in limited numbers. Many of the carefully crafted pieces incorporate the natural shape of the wood in the design and feature pieces of iridescent glass or enamel that enhance the detail. The result is a multi-textured effect singular to each composition. An early 20th-century covered box by Tiffany in the Museum’s collection features delicately carved water lily leaves. Our pin/pendant is based on a leaf design on the original box.

24K gold plate, lightly antiqued. Length 1 3/4 in., width 1 15/16 in.
