Heun Hurricane Lamp
Heun Hurricane Lamp

Arthur Heun (1866–1946) is considered a member of the Prairie School, a group of American architects who worked in the Midwest about 1890–1920. Inspired by the work of Louis Sullivan, and led by Frank Lloyd Wright, these architects defined a new style characterized by low, horizontal forms fitting harmoniously into the flat terrain of their region. Constructed in natural materials such as brick, oak, and glass, large open rooms flowed into one another, often organized around a central masonry fireplace. In addition to the main structure, Prairie-style architects also designed furniture, lighting, and some accessories for their commissions. Our Heun Hurricane Lamp is based on original wall sconces in the Museum's collection designed by Arthur Heun for the Sedgwick Brinsmaid House in Des Moines, Iowa (1901–02).

Colored glass with lead solder and a copper/nickel-plated metal framework, hand made. Height 8 1/4 in.; width 3 7/8 in.
